Keeping family traditions alive through documented wishes

There’s nothing like moving house to remind you of just how special certain possessions can be. The memories attached to them and the family traditions that those memories are built on.

For Amir*, helping his family move has a long history of shared experiences, and of ‘moving cake’. Amir explained, “…whenever one of us moves house, we all turn up to help and someone brings ‘moving’ cake… it is delicious, filling, and easy to transport!”

Amir recently discovered ‘moving cake’ is actually a classic Australian Women’s Weekly Almond Apricot cake, but that doesn’t change how he and his family feel about it. “It made me realise the importance of shared traditions,” Amir noted, “when I started to prepare my estate plan, I made sure to include details about who I would like to receive my possessions.”

By documenting his wishes, including which sentimental possessions get passed on to whom, Amir hopes his family will enjoy the memories associated with them and keep their traditions alive.

You can document your wishes in an estate plan, including Will, enduring power of attorney and enduring guardianship.
