A pathway back to independence

When Leigh experienced a sudden health crisis, the Public Trustee helped her get back on track and regain financial independence.

When Leigh experienced a sudden health crisis, she was no longer able to manage her financial affairs independently. Following an application to the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT), the Public Trustee was appointed as administrator for six months to help stabilise her situation and support her recovery.

One of the first challenges was the risk of losing her home. The Public Trustee acted quickly to address urgent financial and legal matters and protect her housing. The situation became more complex when an unauthorised person entered her home and caused significant damage. Working with support services and relevant authorities, the Public Trustee helped resolve these issues.

As Leigh’s health improved and the issues affecting her affairs were resolved, she gradually regained control of her finances. Her Client Account Manager worked closely with her throughout the process, helping her access financial entitlements, strengthen her financial position and rebuild confidence in managing her affairs.

By the end of the six-month administration order, Leigh had regained the capacity to manage independently. Grateful for the support she received, she thanked her Client Account Manager with a bunch of flowers and a heartfelt note of appreciation.

Leigh’s story demonstrates how timely support, practical assistance and a focus on restoring independence can help people through a crisis and back to managing their own lives.
