During Advance Care Planning Week 2025, we hosted a free webinar featuring experts from the Public Trustee, Palliative Care Tasmania, and the Office of the Public Guardian to discuss the key documents needed to safeguard your future decisions.

✔️ Why Planning Ahead Matters
Many Australians do not have essential legal documents in place, leaving families with difficult decisions during already stressful times. The webinar emphasised the importance of preparing a Will, Enduring Power of Attorney, Enduring Guardianship, and an Advance Care Directive to ensure your choices are known and legally upheld.

✔️ Understanding Advance Care Planning
Hannah Butler from Palliative Care Tasmania explained that Advance Care Planning is not just for the elderly or terminally ill—it’s for everyone. She highlighted how having conversations early can reduce family stress and ensure medical decisions align with personal values.

✔️ What does an Enduring Guardian do?
Eliza Jones from the Office of the Public Guardian discussed the Enduring Guardianship document, which allows you to appoint someone you trust to make personal and healthcare decisions on your behalf if your decision-making ability is impaired. She explained how this differs from an Enduring Power of Attorney, which is strictly for financial decisions.

✔️ The Role of the Public Trustee
Fiona Sullivan from the Public Trustee explained how their team assists in drafting and securely storing Will and Enduring Powers of Attorney documents. She stressed the importance of appointing a reliable executor and the risks of dying without a valid Will. As well as the importance of appointing a trusteed attorney to assist manage your financial affaires if your decision-making ability is impaired

  • Start conversations with your family and loved ones.
  • Create or update your documents, being a Will, Enduring Power of Attorney, Enduring guardianship to appoint people to take on important roles for you.
  • Consider registering your Advance Care Directive with TASCAT for accessibility.
  • Seek legal advice if needed to ensure documents are correctly prepared.
